US Primary Aluminium Output Drops

The United States’ domestic primary aluminium production increased in July 2024 to rebound to the level of output achieved in May. Compared to the production volume in June at 55,000 tonnes, the United States output in July gained 2,000 tonnes M-o-M, according to the latest data from the US Geological Survey.
Following the increase in July, the United States’ primary aluminium production volume amounted to 57,000 tonnes, which was, however, significantly down by 7,000 tonnes or 11 per cent year-on-year from 64,000 tonnes.
In the first seven months of 2024, the United States’ primary aluminium output totalled 396,000 tonnes, registering an annual downfall of 10.41 per cent from 442,000 tonnes.
The average daily production of primary aluminium in the United States during July 2024 was 1,830 tonnes, which reflected no change from the previous month but edged a drop of 11.17 per cent from 2,060 tonnes in July 2023.
Total aluminium recovered from scrap in July 2024 was 292,000 tonnes versus 295,000 tonnes in June 2024 and 278,000 tonnes in July 2023. On a month-on-month basis, the scrap recovery volume dropped by 3,000 tonnes or 1 per cent, but that on a year-on-year calculation surged by 5.04 per cent, indicating a shift in market preference to secondary aluminium.
Of the total aluminium recovered from scrap, 159,000 tonnes was recovered from new scrap and 133,000 tonnes from old scrap. There’s also a year-on-year shift in the ratio of scrap recovery from old and new scrap. From 41.7 per cent of recovery from old scrap in July 2023, the ratio increased to 45.6 per cent in July 2024.
